About us

The Institute of Publishing

The Institute of Publishing (IoP) is a network of publishing and training professionals who deliver training courses for the publishing industry and in developing publishing skills.

As an independent charity, the IoP provides cost-effective and high-quality training for publishers in the UK and overseas. Each year, we train over 2,000 delegates to the highest standards across all our training offerings. Students come from all over the world, including Africa, Australasia, Asia, the Americas and Europe.
IoP courses provide specific learning outcomes that are designed to make an immediate, positive difference in the workplace, whether working in-house or freelance. All IoP tutors are practitioners, which means that they bring their real-world experience to the courses they teach, enriching the experience for students and making the courses more practical and interactive. You can see profiles of the IoP's current tutors and authors here.

Our history

The IoP began life as the training division of the Publishers Association and became independent in the 1970s under the auspices of The Unwin Trust. It traded as Book House Training Centre (BHTC) until the 1990s, when it became The Publishing Training Centre Foundation (PTC). In 2016, the PTC became a Living Wage employer and, in 2026, it signed the Publishers Association’s Publishing Inclusivity Pledge.

The IoP was created in September 2026 with the merger of the two charities, the PTC and the Publishing Qualifications Board (PQB).

Who we are

The charity operates with a small staff team, who work remotely and manage all operations. Their work is overseen by a dedicated Board of Trustees, who have a broad range of experience and expertise in the publishing and training industries. The lifeblood of the IoP is its tutors and authors, who create, devise, write, update and deliver its courses, mark assignments and offer specialist and careers guidance to students.

You can follow the IoP on Bluesky, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube, and sign up to receive regular news and information about our courses here. For more information, contact us on courses@instituteofpublishing.org or telephone +44 (0)20 8874 2718.

Our partners

The IoP works with other organisations that provide training in areas where we are not active.
We also partner with organisations that don’t provide training themselves, but act as gateways and signposts to useful resources for those seeking training and development.
